About
Biography
Pandit Umakant Gundecha is a leading authority of Hindustani Dhrupad vocal music and a prominent torchbearer of the Dagar vani tradition. Born on 8 May 1959 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, he grew up in an environment deeply connected to Indian classical arts. His formal musical foundation was laid at Madhav Music College, after which he moved to Bhopal in 1981 to pursue intensive training in Dhrupad under the legendary Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. This period of rigorous gurukul-based training shaped his command over alap, nom-tom, and dhrupad composition and the meditative discipline central to the Dagar tradition.
Pandit Umakant Gundecha possesses a strong academic background, holding postgraduate degrees in music and economics, which is reflected in his structured approach to both performance and pedagogy. His public performance career began in 1985 at the Uttaradhikar Dance and Music Festival in Bhopal, marking the start of a sustained international presence. Over the decades, he has performed at virtually all major classical music festivals in India and at prestigious venues and institutions across Europe, the United States, Australia, Singapore, Bangladesh, the UAE, and Hong Kong. His music has been widely broadcast on Indian television and radio, as well as on British, American, German, and French radio networks.
A significant contribution of Pandit Umakant Gundecha has been his role in expanding the Dhrupad repertoire. He has presented compositions based on texts by major Hindi poets such as Tulsidas, Padmakar, and Nirala, while also interpreting rare traditional compositions preserved within the Dagar lineage. Along with his brother Ramakant Gundecha (together known as the Gundecha Brothers), he played a crucial role in re-establishing Dhrupad as a living, contemporary concert tradition without compromising its classical purity.
Pandit Umakant Gundecha is also a dedicated teacher and institution builder. He co-founded the Dhrupad Kendra near Bhopal, a residential gurukul that attracts students from India and abroad and follows the traditional guru–shishya parampara. Through this institution, he has trained numerous disciples who are today active performers and educators worldwide. He has also served in key cultural roles, including as a founder member of the Dhrupad Music Institute of America and as a trustee of Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, contributing to policy, pedagogy, and artistic programming.
His artistic excellence and lifelong contribution to Dhrupad have been recognized with several of India’s most prestigious honors, including the Sanskriti Award, Pandit Kumar Gandharva Award, Dagar Gharana Award, Puttaraj Gawai Award, Padma Shri (2012), Madhya Pradesh Gaurav Samman, Swati Tirunal Samman, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2017). Through sustained performance, rigorous teaching, and institutional leadership, Pandit Umakant Gundecha continues to remain one of the most authoritative and respected voices of Dhrupad music in the world today.
