Thiruvarur Bakthavathsalam

Thiruvarur Bakthavathsalam was born in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu into a family engaged in classical music. His initial training was in vocal music under his mother, Smt. T. R. Anandavalli. He later shifted to percussion and underwent intensive training in mridangam under his maternal uncle, Thiruvarur Sri Krishnamurthy, following the traditional gurukulavasam system. By the age of nine, he was accompanying his mother in concerts.

At sixteen, he moved to Chennai, where he began performing regularly across sabhas and cultural institutions. During his early years, he received prizes from various sabhas and was graded by All India Radio, eventually attaining the top grade. His career includes performances in India and internationally, including participation in the opening ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. He has worked with musicians across stylistic and cultural traditions and has represented Indian classical music in cross-cultural contexts.

Bakthavathsalam has been associated with performances for social and charitable causes, including benefit concerts for institutions such as Shankara Nethralaya and cancer support organisations. He has conducted lecture-demonstrations and youth-oriented programmes under platforms such as SPIC MACAY and has been involved in projects supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

He founded the ensemble Laya Madhuraa, structured around traditional Carnatic instruments, integrating melodic and percussion sections. He has also organised large-scale percussion presentations, including multi-mridangam ensembles in temple and festival settings. For several years, he served as Secretary of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Mummoorthigal Jayanthi Vizha at the Arulmigu Thyagarajaswamy Temple in Thiruvarur, a week-long annual cultural festival.

In 2000, he established the Laya Madhuraa School of Music, with centres in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Toronto. The institution focuses on structured mridangam pedagogy and has trained students in India and abroad. The school also organises the annual Laya Madhuraa Sangeethothsavam in Chennai, combining concerts with honours for contributors to Carnatic music.

His discography includes solo and ensemble recordings such as Laya Madhuraa, Thala Bhakthi, Rhythmic Symphony (a percussion collaboration with tabla artist Pandit Anindo Chatterjee), and Divine Ensemble. His awards include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2006), Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy (2021), and 2026 honour with Padma Shri awards from the Government of India .
