Biography
Swaminathan Selvaganesh, often called Swami, is an Indian percussionist and composer best known for his command of the kanjira, the South Indian frame drum. He belongs to a prominent Carnatic percussion family whose contributions have had a lasting impact on Indian classical music.
He is the grandson of the legendary T. H. Vikku Vinayakram, the Padma Bhushan awardee and Grammy-winning ghatam maestro, and the son of V. Selvaganesh, a Grammy-winning kanjira artist associated with the fusion group Shakti. Growing up in this environment gave Swami early exposure to high-level rhythmic training and performance traditions.
As a performer, Swami has appeared at major festivals and international platforms, presenting both traditional Carnatic repertoire and rhythm-based collaborative projects. His playing reflects a strong grounding in classical technique while remaining open to contemporary musical contexts.
He has shared the stage with leading Indian classical musicians such as Zakir Hussain, L. Subramaniam, and Hariprasad Chaurasia. Alongside live performance, he is also active as a composer and studio musician, contributing to film music in the Tamil industry and participating in large-scale soundtrack projects, including major commercial films.
Swami is also skilled in konnakol (vocal percussion), an important element of South Indian rhythmic training. This ability strengthens his versatility as both a soloist and collaborator.
Overall, Swaminathan Selvaganesh represents a continuation of a respected percussion lineage while engaging with modern musical spaces. His work connects Carnatic rhythmic knowledge with wider contemporary audiences, maintaining tradition while exploring new contexts.
