Biography

Pandit Subhen Chatterjee is a distinguished Indian percussionist and tabla player whose art reflects depth, balance, and creative freedom. Trained under the illustrious Pandit Swapan Chowdhury of the Lucknow Gharana, he built a strong classical foundation and later enriched his style by learning the nuances of other gharanas. This openness has given his playing a distinct voice rooted in tradition yet expressive and contemporary.

He is widely praised by critics for his stage presence, musical sensitivity, and powerful accompaniment. Leading publications such as The Washington Post, The Telegraph, The Statesman, Economic Times, and Asian Age have highlighted his maturity, solo brilliance, and versatility across vocal and instrumental music.

Subhen has accompanied many of India’s greatest maestros, including Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Smt. Girija Devi, Pt. Jasraj, Smt. Shobha Gurtu, Pt. Rajan–Sajan Misra, Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pt. V. G. Jog, Pt. Viswa Mohan Bhatt, Ustad Ashish Khan, and Pt. Ronu Mazumder. He is also a fine soloist.

In 1985, he founded India’s pioneering fusion band KARMA, which remains a landmark in eastern India’s world-music movement. He later formed Friends of Drums with Sivamani, a project dedicated to sharing stages between renowned and emerging musicians and supporting senior artists in need.

His album Artistry received a Grammy nomination, while Bandish Fusion earned a JPF Award nomination. He has received honors including the Sangeet Samman Award, the Pride of Bengal Award, and honorary citizenship from the State of Alabama, USA.

Recently, he became part of a Guinness World Records achievement for a 60-minute live performance featuring over 300 musicians and 350 instruments. Through classical excellence and bold collaboration, Pandit Subhen Chatterjee continues to expand the language of rhythm while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.
