Biography

Pt. Samir Dey is a tabla artist based in Kathmandu, Nepal, known for his contributions to the Hindustani classical music tradition in the region. Through concerts, teaching, and collaborations with vocalists and instrumentalists, he has played an important role in strengthening the presence of classical percussion music in Nepal’s cultural landscape.

He is closely associated with the Kir Sangeet Ashram, where he works as both a performer and a teacher. Over the years, Pt. Samir Dey has accompanied and collaborated with several musicians in classical concerts, including vocalists such as Laboni Chakraborty and Umesh Raj Khadka, presenting ragas like Puriya Dhanashree and Darbari. His performances also include collaborations with instrumentalists such as sitarist Suresh Raj Bajracharya and flute maestro Pt. Rupak Kulkarni.

Alongside his performance career, Pt. Samir Dey is actively involved in music education and mentorship. He leads a percussion ensemble composed of his students and regularly conducts training sessions focused on classical rhythm and tabla performance. Through these activities, he continues to contribute to the teaching, preservation, and promotion of Hindustani classical percussion traditions in Nepal.
