Biography

R. K. Shriramkumar is a distinguished Carnatic violinist, vocalist, and composer, widely regarded as one of the foremost accompanists in Indian classical music. Born in Chennai in 1966 into the renowned Rudrapatna musical lineage, he trained under Savitri Satyamurthy and his grandfather R. K. Venkatarama Shastri, later refining his violin skills with V. V. Subrahmanyam. His parallel training in vocal music under D. K. Jayaraman and D. K. Pattammal has significantly shaped his signature gayaki style of violin playing.

Over a career spanning several decades, Shriramkumar has accompanied legendary musicians such as M. S. Subbulakshmi, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, D. K. Pattammal, and M. Balamuralikrishna. He is also an accomplished soloist, composer, and scholar, known for his deep engagement with the works of Muthuswami Dikshitar and his ability to bridge theory, sahitya, and performance. His contributions extend to composing music for dance productions and thematic presentations, as well as conducting lecture-demonstrations across global institutions.

A recipient of numerous awards, R. K. Shriramkumar was conferred the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi in 2025 by the Music Academy, Madras. He has performed extensively across India and internationally at major festivals and venues, while also mentoring young musicians and contributing to initiatives such as the Youth Association for Classical Music (YACM).
