About
Biography
Ramakant Gundecha was born on November 24, 1962, in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. He pursued formal music education early in life and later dedicated himself to the study of Dhrupad, one of the oldest forms of Hindustani classical music. In 1981, he moved to Bhopal for advanced training under Dhrupad maestros Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, inheritors of the distinguished Dagar lineage.
After years of rigorous taleem, he began performing publicly in the mid-1980s. Along with Umakant Gundecha, he helped bring Dhrupad to wider audiences through concerts, lecture-demonstrations, recordings, and international tours. Their presentations were noted for detailed raga development, meditative alap, and adherence to the aesthetics of Dagar vani.
Beyond performance, Ramakant Gundecha was deeply involved in pedagogy. The Gundecha family established Dhrupad Kendra near Bhopal as a gurukul dedicated to immersive Dhrupad training. Students from India and abroad studied there in the traditional guru-shishya system, making the institution an important center for Dhrupad learning.
He was also associated with cultural institutions in advisory and trustee roles and broadcasters and cultural organizations in India and internationally, documenting his music. His recordings were released by major classical labels and circulated among serious listeners of Hindustani music.
For his contribution to Indian classical music, he received numerous honors, including
- Sanskriti Award (1993)
- Pandit Kumar Gandharva Award (1998)
- Dagar Gharana Award (2001)
- Puttaraj Gawai Award (2010)
- Padma Shri (2012)
- Madhya Pradesh Gaurav Samman (2017)
- Swati Tirunal Samman (2018)
- Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2017, joint)
Ramakant Gundecha passed away on 8 November 2019 in Bhopal at the age of 57. His work as a performer and teacher remains part of the contemporary history of Dhrupad’s resurgence in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
