Biography

Patri Satish Kumar occupies a distinct place in Carnatic percussion for combining strong classical grounding with contemporary exploration. His playing is shaped by the traditions of Vizianagaram and the training he received from three prominent gurus. Over his extensive career, he has developed a personal style defined by the synergy he creates between the treble and bass heads of the mridangam, producing a striking clarity of rhythm and tone. His approach supports both traditional concert formats and collaborative projects with Hindustani, fusion, and jazz musicians.

Patri has performed at major international venues, including Royal Albert Hall (London), Sydney Opera House, Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), and Théâtre de la Ville (Paris). His concerts and percussion work have been broadcast on Radio France, All India Radio, and several global media platforms. In addition to concert performances, he has introduced notable concepts such as “GAJAANA” and innovative tala frameworks like Yathi Praana Talas, expanding rhythmic possibilities within Indian classical music.

His interest in design has resulted in the creation of designer mridangams and the TRI-M two-part mridangam, offering practical enhancements while retaining traditional craftsmanship. Patri also contributes to education through his publication “Patri…001 SIR (South Indian Rhythms)” and through mentoring young performers. His festival initiative, the Patri Drum Festival, brings established percussionists together on one stage, supporting the growth of the percussion community.

Through constant performance, innovation, and teaching, Patri continues to shape the evolving landscape of mridangam in Indian classical music.
