About
Biography
Nitin Mitta is regarded as one of the most accomplished tabla players of his generation, admired for his virtuosity, spontaneity, and refined sense of musical dialogue. Born in Hyderabad in 1975, he began his formal training under Pandit G. Satyanarayana, where his natural aptitude for rhythm was quickly recognized. By the age of ten, he had already presented his first solo tabla recital, marking the beginning of a serious and focused musical path.
During his formative years, Nitin achieved several distinctions, including first prize at the All India Competition held in Kolkata. Seeking to deepen his understanding of repertoire and performance aesthetics, he later trained under Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar in Mumbai. Under this rigorous mentorship, he expanded his tabla vocabulary while developing a mature approach to interpretation, improvisation, and the subtle balance between rhythmic accompaniment and melodic leadership. Both his gurus belong to the lineage of the legendary Ustad Amir Hussain Khan of the Farrukhabad gharana, grounding Nitin firmly in this esteemed tradition.
As an accompanist, Nitin Mitta has shared the stage with some of the most eminent names in Indian classical music, including Pandit Jasraj, Dr. Prabha Atre, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, and Ustad Shahid Parvez. His work also extends into Carnatic music, where he has collaborated with artists such as Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. His accompaniment is valued for its sensitivity, rhythmic intelligence, and ability to enhance the melodic narrative of a performance.
Beyond the classical concert platform, Nitin has established himself as a versatile collaborator in contemporary and cross-cultural projects. His work includes the album Tirtha, created with pianist Vijay Iyer and guitarist R. Prasanna, blending jazz idioms with North and South Indian classical structures. He has also contributed to the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning documentary Smile Pinky and has toured internationally with vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia.
Since relocating to the United States in 2002, Nitin Mitta has remained actively engaged as a performer and educator. He has received arts grants, served on the faculty of Learn Quest Academy of Music, and conducted workshops across the U.S., Europe, Canada, and India. His performances have taken place at major cultural institutions, including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and leading venues in India. Through performance, collaboration, and teaching, Nitin Mitta continues to make a significant contribution to the global presence of Indian classical tabla.
