Nayan Ghosh

Pandit Nayan Ghosh is one of the rare contemporary musicians to command both rhythm and melody at the highest classical level. Born into a celebrated musical family, he received comprehensive training in vocal music, tabla, and sitar under the close supervision of his father, Pandit Nikhil Ghosh—one of the most influential pedagogues of the 20th century. His lineage is further enriched by his uncle, Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, widely regarded as the pioneer of the modern Hindustani flute.

Nayan Ghosh’s early promise was evident when he gave his first tabla solo broadcast on All India Radio in 1960, at just four years of age. Over the decades, he has built an international performance career, appearing at major festivals and concert halls across India, Europe, and North America. As an accompanist, he has shared the stage with legendary figures including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and many others, earning admiration for his sensitivity, balance, and deep raga–tala understanding.

Alongside performance, Nayan Ghosh is deeply committed to music education. He serves as the Director of Sangit Mahabharati in Mumbai and has taught as a visiting professor and guest faculty at institutions such as IIT Bombay, Kent State University, Emory University, the University of Colorado, and the Lausanne Music Conservatory. His discography reflects a wide artistic range, encompassing classical jugalbandis and cross-cultural collaborations.

Honored with numerous national and international awards, including the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Pandit Nayan Ghosh continues to shape Hindustani classical music as a performer, guru, and torchbearer of a rich musical heritage.
