N. C. Bharadwaj

N. C. Bharadwaj is a well-known mridangam player in Carnatic music. He lives in Chennai and is known for his skill in keeping rhythm and supporting other musicians without taking the spotlight. He is an A-Grade artist with All India Radio and respected for his strong technique and respect for tradition. His style is a unique blend of new energy and old knowledge, making him popular with both older and younger musicians. 

Bharadwaj grew up in a family that liked music and art. From a young age, he showed a natural sense of rhythm. While most children found concerts long and tedious, he would listen for hours and tap out the beat with his hands. His parents noticed his talent and started him in mridangam lessons when he was six. This began his journey in music. 

Bharadwaj first learned mridangam from Vidwan Srivanchiyam Sri S. Gopalan, who taught him the basics and discipline needed for the instrument. After his first teacher passed away, Bharadwaj continued learning from Nanganallur Sri R. Sriram, a student of the famous Karaikudi Mani. Under Sri Sriram, Bharadwaj learned more about rhythm and how to play on stage. During these years, he also won many music competitions in Chennai. 

One of the most essential parts of Bharadwaj's music life was learning from the famous mridangam player Dr Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. Training with Dr Sivaraman helped Bharadwaj improve his skills and learn advanced mridangam techniques. This training helped him develop his own style while also honouring his teacher's tradition. 

People like Bharadwaj's clear mridangam sound and the pleasant music he makes. He balances the bass and treble parts of the drum well. He always tries to support the leading artist and adds the right rhythms at the right time. This makes the whole concert work well together. 

For more than 15 years, Bharadwaj has played with many top Carnatic musicians, both older and younger. He has worked with artists like Ramakrishnan Murthy, Abhishek Raghuram, and the Akkarai Sisters (S. Subhalakshmi & S. Sornalatha). He can play well in many types of concerts, whether singing, playing instruments, or participating in special music shows. He often plays in the main concerts during Chennai's big December music festival. 

Bharadwaj's hard work has earned him many awards. He got the Yuva Kala Bharathi award from Bharat Kalachar for being a promising young artist. He has also won the title of Best Mridangam Artist from the Music Academy in Madras. He has been honoured by groups such as Narada Gana Sabha and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. These show he is known for his good performances. 

Bharadwaj has also performed concerts outside India in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, the USA, and the UK. He teaches workshops to share his knowledge with students and music fans worldwide. As he grows as a musician, he works hard to keep mridangam music strong for the future.
