Akkarai S Subhalakshmi

Akkarai S Subhalakshmi is one of India’s most acclaimed Carnatic musicians, equally at home as a violinist and vocalist. Born into the illustrious Akkarai family of Nagercoil, she grew up surrounded by music. Her grandfather, Suchindram Shri S P Sivasubramaniam, was a celebrated vocalist, violinist, and composer, while her grandmother, Smt R Sornambal, was a respected Harikatha exponent.

Trained under her father and guru, Akkarai Shri S Swamynathan, Subhalakshmi began with vocal music before taking to the violin at the age of seven. She honed her skills through long hours of practice, often accompanying recordings of great masters to master adaptability and sensitivity in accompaniment. Her exposure to Hindustani music in Delhi added depth to her artistry.

By eight, she was performing solos and duets with her father. Today, she is renowned for her rich, voice-like tonal quality and ability to seamlessly blend into diverse musical styles. She has performed across India and internationally, including for the Emperor and Empress of Japan. In 2019, she became the youngest violinist to earn the prestigious A-Top Grade status from All India Radio and Doordarshan.
