Mogubai Kurdekar

Mogubai Kurdikar (15 July 1904 – 10 February 2001) was one of the most respected Hindustani classical vocalists of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, known for her depth, discipline, and purity of style. Born in Kurdi village in Goa (then Portuguese India), she rose from humble beginnings to become a legendary figure in Indian classical music. 

Mogubai’s early life was marked by struggle and determination. Her mother, Jayashreebai, recognized her talent and arranged her initial music training when she was just ten years old. She later joined a traveling theatre company, where she worked as an actress and received further musical exposure. However, her mother passed away when she was still very young, leaving her to face life’s hardships alone. 

A turning point in her life came when she met the legendary guru Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. He recognized her talent and began training her. Despite facing obstacles—including opposition from other students and interruptions in her training—Mogubai remained deeply committed to her musical journey. She continued her rigorous practice (riyaz) and eventually completed her training under him, mastering the complex and demanding style of the gharana. 

Mogubai Kurdikar became known for her serious, disciplined, and traditional approach to music. She specialized mainly in khayal singing, but also had knowledge of other forms such as dhrupad, tarana, and bhajans. Her singing style was marked by clarity, intricate raga development, and strict adherence to classical grammar. She avoided lighter forms like thumri in public performances to maintain artistic purity. 

From the 1940s onward, she performed widely across India and gained recognition as one of the leading exponents of her gharana. However, her journey was not easy. During her time, female artists often faced discrimination and lack of respect. Despite being a great artist, she sometimes had to travel in poor conditions and received less recognition compared to male musicians. 

Mogubai was also a dedicated teacher and passed on her rich musical legacy to many disciples. Her most famous student was her daughter, Kishori Amonkar, who later became one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century. Through her teaching, Mogubai helped shape an entire generation of musicians. 

In recognition of her immense contribution, she received prestigious honors such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1968) and the Padma Bhushan (1974). Mogubai Kurdikar passed away in 2001, leaving behind a powerful legacy. She is remembered as a pioneer who upheld the purity of Hindustani classical music and paved the way for future generations of female vocalists.
