Toronto-based Punjab gharana tabla player Kiran Morarji is a disciple of Zakir Hussain and a student of Yogesh Samsi, active as a soloist and accompanist in North America.

Biography

Kiran Morarji is a tabla player from Toronto, Canada, associated with the Punjab gharana. He began learning tabla at the age of eight and has since developed a steady presence in the North American Indian classical music circuit as both a soloist and an accompanist.

For over two decades, Morarji has studied under the guidance of the renowned tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, an influence that has shaped his approach to tone, repertoire, and rhythmic clarity. Since 2019, he has also been studying with senior tabla artist Yogesh Samsi, further deepening his grounding in traditional knowledge and performance practice.

He has appeared in concerts and cultural programs across Canada and the United States. His performances include participation in tribute events dedicated to the legacy of Ali Akbar Khan, as well as community concerts such as Toronto-based mehfils and devotional or cross-style music programs. He has also contributed to recordings and programs within spiritual and cultural communities.

Alongside his musical work, Morarji maintains a professional career in human resources and talent acquisition in the Greater Toronto Area. He is a graduate of York University and holds certifications in leadership and process improvement.
