Biography

Karan Minhas is a tabla artist recognized for his energetic improvisations, creative thinking, and attentive accompaniment in Hindustani classical music. Rooted in the Punjab gharana tradition, he began his formal training under Prof. Purshotam Singh, building a strong foundation in traditional repertoire and technique.

For over 17 years, Minhas studied with and drew inspiration from the eminent tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. This long-term guidance shaped his musical approach, combining respect for tradition with openness to new musical contexts. His playing reflects clarity of bols, rhythmic control, and an ability to respond sensitively to fellow musicians on stage.

Minhas has appeared in concerts and tribute events connected to the legacy of Indian classical music. He has performed as part of ensembles associated with Zakir Hussain, sharing the stage with fellow percussionists such as Salar Nader and Kiran Morarji. His performances include tribute concerts dedicated to the music of Ali Akbar Khan and appearances in international music series in North America.

Alongside performing, Minhas is active in educational outreach. He regularly engages with the global tabla community, including hosting online riyaz (practice) sessions where students and enthusiasts can follow structured practice and learn fundamentals of tala and technique.
