Kamal Sabri

Kamal Sabri is a renowned Indian classical sarangi player and an important representative of the Moradabad–Sabri gharana. He was born into a distinguished family of sarangi players and is the son of the legendary maestro Ustad Sabri Khan. Growing up in such a rich musical environment, Kamal Sabri was exposed to the traditions of Hindustani classical music from an early age, which shaped his deep understanding of the art form.

He received rigorous training under his father following the traditional guru-shishya parampara. Under this guidance, he mastered the intricate techniques of sarangi playing, including gayaki ang (vocal style), meend, and complex ornamentation. His playing reflects the hallmark features of the Sabri gharana, known for its emotional depth, clarity of notes, and expressive range that closely resembles the human voice.

Kamal Sabri has performed extensively across India and internationally, representing Indian classical music on prestigious stages. He has not only performed solo but has also accompanied many leading vocalists and instrumentalists. In addition to traditional classical performances, he has explored fusion and world music, collaborating with international artists and bringing the sound of the sarangi to global audiences.

Apart from performing, he is also dedicated to teaching and preserving the sarangi tradition. He has trained students and contributed to spreading awareness about this rare and complex instrument. Through workshops, concerts, and educational initiatives, he continues to promote Indian classical music both in India and abroad.

Kamal Sabri is also known for carrying forward his family legacy through his son, Suhail Yusuf Khan, who is a prominent young sarangi artist today. Together, they represent the continuation of the Sabri lineage, ensuring that the rich heritage of the sarangi and the Moradabad–Sabri gharana remains alive and relevant in the modern era.
