G.S. Sachdev

G. S. Sachdev was born on 24 April 1935 in Lyallpur, Punjab Province (then British India). He developed an early interest in music and later underwent rigorous training in bansuri under the noted flautist Vijay Raghav Rao. His discipleship lasted over a decade, including several years of close, residential learning in the traditional guru-shishya style. This training shaped his musical foundation and approach to raga.

Over time, he settled in the United States, where he continued to perform and teach. He played a role in presenting Indian classical flute music to Western audiences through concerts, lecture-demonstrations, and recordings. His association with international music circles included serving on the advisory board of the World Flute Society.

As a teacher, he guided students from varied musical backgrounds. Among those who studied with him were composer and flautist Oscar van Dillen and Korean-American composer and performer Jin Hi Kim. His cross-cultural teaching contributed to a broader understanding of Indian raga music outside India.

Sachdev released numerous recordings over his career, including titles such as Spirit, Flights of Improvisation, Full Moon, Classical North Indian Ragas, Romantic Ragas, and Greeting of the Dawn. These albums circulated widely among listeners of Indian and world music.

He passed away on 24 June 2018 in San Rafael, California, at the age of 83. His legacy remains associated with the international dissemination of bansuri music and the meditative aesthetics of Hindustani classical performance.
