Biography
Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao (3 November 1925 – 30 November 2011), also known as Vijaya Raghava Rao, was a pioneering figure in Indian music whose artistic vision went far beyond conventional performance. Trained as a flutist, he brought a deeply intellectual and experimental approach to music, integrating elements of classical tradition with new ideas in composition and presentation. His work reflected a rare balance of technical mastery, creative freedom, and scholarly insight.
In addition to his achievements as a performer and composer, Vijay Raghav Rao made lasting contributions as a choreographer, musicologist, poet, and fiction writer. His interdisciplinary outlook helped broaden the scope of Indian performing arts, particularly in the field of creative and experimental music.
