About
Biography
Deepak Ram was born on 11 May 1960 in South Africa to a family of Indian origin, whose ancestors had arrived as indentured laborers. His early life unfolded during the apartheid era, including the forced relocation of his family from Sophiatown to Lenasia under segregation policies. Surrounded by both jazz records at home and Indian film and classical music, he developed an early interest in sound; his first flute was improvised from a drainpipe.
He began formal study of bansuri and tabla in South Africa under Sri Jeram Bhana in the mid-1970s. As a teenager, he travelled to India, where he studied under flute maker and musician Sri Suryakant Limaye and spent time learning from Vijay Raghav Rao. In 1981, he became a disciple of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, a formative association that grounded him firmly in the Hindustani raga system. He also studied tabla, vocal music, and theory with several teachers and later completed a master’s degree in music from Rhodes University, focusing on links between Indian and Western composition.
As a performer, Deepak Ram is recognized for striking a balance between traditional raga exposition and exploratory and collaborative work. He has appeared in concerts across the USA, India, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and has accompanied his guru, Hariprasad Chaurasia, at international venues. His collaborations include work with jazz musicians, world-music artists, and groups such as Juno Reactor, whose projects have been featured in global film soundtracks, including The Matrix Revolutions. His bansuri can be heard on numerous film scores and albums across genres.
Deepak Ram has released multiple solo and collaborative albums, including Flute for Thought, Searching for Satyam, Samvad, One Breath, and Indentured Blue. As a session musician, he has appeared on dozens of recordings. His compositions range from raga-based works to pieces for ensembles, choral settings, and cross-cultural projects.
Teaching is another significant part of his career. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, lectured in South African universities, and conducted workshops internationally. Known for his clear and accessible teaching style, he has also produced instructional material such as Harmonium Made Easy.
