Biography

Debopriya Chatterjee is a leading Hindustani classical flautist, widely recognized as one half of the iconic duo The Flute Sisters (Debopriya and Suchismita Chatterjee). Born in Allahabad into a family of musicians, she was raised in an environment where music was a way of life. Her parents, Prof. Robin Chatterjee and Smt. Krishna Chatterjee, both a vocalist and a composer, guided her early musical path and encouraged her to take up the bansuri.

Her initial training began under the eminent flautist Pandit Bholanath Prasanna. This foundation later deepened when she came under the tutelage of Padmavibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the foremost exponent of the Maihar–Senia gharana. Under his guidance, Debopriya absorbed not only technical mastery but also the discipline, tone, and spiritual depth that define the bansuri tradition.

Debopriya pursued formal studies in both Indian and Western music, including advanced training in Europe through the Nuffic Scholarship awarded by the Indian Embassy in the Netherlands. She completed her academic qualifications in music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, earning top honors and gold medals in flute and vocal music. She is also a recipient of a National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

As a performer, Debopriya regularly appears at major Indian classical music platforms such as the Dover Lane Music Conference, Sawai Gandharva Festival, and Saptak Music Festival. Internationally, she has performed across Europe, the United States, Australia, and Asia. She frequently accompanies her guru, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, on prestigious stages in India and abroad, a rare honor that reflects her stature and trust within the lineage.

Her achievements include the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Surmani title from Sur Singar Samsad, and several other national recognitions. She is a regular artist of All India Radio and has numerous recordings to her credit, including the notable Guru–Shishya album with her guru, released by Sense World Music, London.

Debopriya Chatterjee’s career represents continuity of tradition through discipline, humility, and sustained artistic practice. Rooted in lineage and guided by rigorous training, she carries the voice of the bansuri forward with clarity and purpose.
