Biography
Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee is a noted sitar and surbahar artist of the Imdadkhani (Etawah) gharana, known for a style that blends melodic, vocal-like expression with strong technique. Born in 1955 into a musical family in Bhilai–Durg, he started learning sitar at the age of five from his father and guru, Acharya Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, who was skilled in several instruments and vocal music. Growing up around visiting musicians gave him early exposure to classical music.
As a teenager, he won national music competitions in 1970 and began receiving recognition at a young age. He later became a Grade-A artist of All India Radio and was promoted to Top Grade in 1986. Alongside music, he completed a degree in metallurgical engineering from NIT Raipur while continuing to perform.
With a performing career of over five decades, he has toured widely in India, Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East, appearing in more than 25 countries. He has also taught at music institutions in Venice and Rotterdam, helping share Hindustani classical music with international students.
His playing is known for its gayaki ang, where the sitar follows the style of khayal singing. His alap often includes long, smooth meends, followed by jor, gat with tabla, and a fast jhala. He is also recognized for adapting the tappa style—known for quick and intricate phrases—to the sitar.
He has released many recordings on CD, LP, and cassette and has also performed and recorded on the surbahar, where he focuses on slow, detailed alap and rich tone. His interest in sound led him to spend years studying and improving sitar construction and setup to achieve the tone he prefers.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2019 for his contribution to Indian classical music. Today, he is regarded as a senior and respected figure in Hindustani instrumental music, known for both tradition and thoughtful innovation.
