Anupam Joshi

Anupam Joshi’s musical life began early. Born into a family with strong academic and social values, he started learning tabla at the age of nine under Pandit Swatantra Kumar Savita in Jabalpur. During these years, he also absorbed the atmosphere of classical vocal music, listening closely to lessons conducted nearby and developing a natural attraction to raga and melody.

His dedication to tabla grew into more than a decade of focused training in taal shastra. This period shaped his understanding of rhythm, discipline, and stage presence. He performed widely with senior musicians, gaining experience in concerts across India and abroad.

A turning point came through his exposure to Sufi thought and music, especially the qawwalis of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the poetry of Bulleh Shah and Amir Khusrau. This influence opened a deeper inner search, pushing him beyond rhythm alone toward a more expressive musical voice. Though vocal challenges limited his path as a singer, his training under Guru Mandakini Chaphalkar strengthened his understanding of raga and sur.

The discovery of the sarod became central to this journey. Moved by the music of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Anupam chose to pursue this demanding instrument, even in the absence of easy access to teachers or resources in Pune. Through persistence, he built a new musical identity around the sarod.

Anupam has performed at leading platforms such as the Sawai Gandharva Festival, Gangubai Hangal Mahotsav, India Habitat Centre, and international festivals in Japan and Europe. His recorded work includes the album Music for Meditation, contributions to film and documentary soundtracks, music for digital games, and original compositions in classical and semi-classical styles.

He continues to refine his art under the guidance of Pt. Rajeev Taranath and Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. Anupam Joshi’s practice reflects a steady evolution, moving from rhythm to melody, from structure to expression, while remaining rooted in discipline and lifelong learning.
