Biography

Dr. Aneesh Pradhan is one of India’s leading tabla exponents, trained under the legendary Nikhil Ghosh. His repertoire reflects the traditions of the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad, and Punjab gharanas, giving his playing both stylistic depth and structural clarity. He is widely regarded as a distinguished soloist and a sensitive accompanist for vocal, instrumental, and dance performances.

Aneesh Pradhan has performed at major concerts and festivals across India and internationally and has recorded extensively for national and global record labels. His solo albums, Tabla: The Solo Tradition and Tabla Solo: A Continuing Tradition, document the evolving idiom of tabla performance. He broadcasts regularly on Indian radio and television and has been featured on international networks, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Beyond performance, he is an active composer for theater, film, television, and dance. He received the Natyadarpan Award for Best Background Score for the Marathi play Tumbara. He has contributed music and research to significant projects such as Stories in a Song and served as music designer and consultant for the award-winning film The Disciple.

Aneesh Pradhan is deeply engaged in cross-cultural collaboration. He has been associated with the Asian Fantasy Orchestra (Japan) since 1998 and with Ensemble Modern, Frankfurt, since 2003. His international projects include collaborations in Europe and Australia, with several works released commercially.

He holds a doctorate in history and has held academic and research positions at leading institutions, including Macquarie University, Monash University, the University of New England, and the University of Mumbai. In 2016, he was awarded the Indian Council for Cultural Relations Chair in Indian Studies at Monash University. He regularly conducts lecture-demonstrations and workshops in India and abroad.

An accomplished author, he has written extensively on Hindustani music. His books include Hindustani Music in Colonial Bombay, Tabla: A Performer’s Perspective, Hindustani Music: Ways of Listening, and Chasing the Raag Dream. He is also the director of Underscore Records, co-founded with Shubha Mudgal, and co-curator of the international festival Baajaa Gaajaa: Music from 21st Century India. Based in Mumbai, Aneesh Pradhan continues to contribute to Hindustani music as a performer, composer, researcher, educator, and writer.
