Biography

Shubha Mudgal is a Hindustani classical vocalist whose music reflects both tradition and creative exploration. Born in Prayagraj to an academically and artistically inclined family, she received rigorous training from respected maestros, including Pandit Ramashreya Jha “Ramrang” and Pandit Kumar Gandharva, gaining versatility in khayal, thumri, dadra and devotional styles.

 

Since the 1980s, Shubha Mudgal has built a distinguished performance career defined by vocal depth and creative experimentation. Her artistry spans live concerts, studio recordings, and original compositions for films and collaborative works. Esteemed awards, including the Padma Shri, the Gold Plaque Award at the Chicago International Film Festival, and the Yash Bharati Samman, highlight the impact of her contributions to Indian music.

 

Committed to music education and cultural documentation, Mudgal has served on national advisory bodies and contributed to arts curriculum initiatives. She has also held academic and research positions at institutions such as Goa University and Ashoka University. Together with tabla maestro Aneesh Pradhan, she founded Underscore Records and launched Sangeet Kosh, platforms dedicated to supporting and preserving India’s rich musical heritage. Through her continued work as a vocalist, composer, mentor and cultural commentator, she remains an influential presence in contemporary Indian music.
