Biography
Ananda Shankar (11 December 1942 – 26 March 1999) was a forward-thinking Indian musician whose work played a significant role in shaping world music and Indo-Western fusion. Born in Almora and raised in an artistic environment shaped by dance and music, he was the son of Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar and the nephew of sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Rather than following a conventional lineage, he trained under Pandit Lalmani Misra at Banaras Hindu University, developing a strong foundation in Indian classical music while cultivating an independent voice.
In the late 1960s, Ananda Shankar moved to the United States, where he began experimenting with Western musical forms. His debut album, Ananda Shankar (1970), combined classical sitar with contemporary rock interpretations, drawing international attention. Returning to India, he continued to explore new sonic territories, most notably with Ananda Shankar and His Music (1975), which fused sitar, jazz-funk rhythms, electronic instruments, and Indian percussion.
During the 1990s, his music experienced a revival in the UK club scene, leading to collaborations with electronic and breakbeat artists and culminating in the posthumously released album Walking On. Known for his adventurous spirit and genre-defying sound, Ananda Shankar left behind a body of work that continues to resonate with listeners across cultures and generations.
