Ajoy Chakrabarty

Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty occupies a unique position in Indian classical music, combining deep traditional grounding with exceptional stylistic breadth. His early musical orientation was influenced by his father, Ajit Kumar Chakraborty, and other local mentors, before his formal training was shaped under Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh and later Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, of the Patiala-Kasur lineage. These influences firmly established his foundation in dhrupad and khyal while nurturing a refined sense of melody and rhythm.

Beyond his primary gharana, he absorbed musical insights from maestros of the Jaipur, Gwalior, Kirana, Agra, Rampur, and Carnatic traditions, which gave his singing remarkable flexibility and depth. Equally accomplished in thumri, tappa, bhajan, folk, and modern compositions, he performs fluently in several Indian languages and English.

An alumnus of Rabindra Bharati University and a senior guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty has shaped generations of musicians. With extensive international performances, over a hundred recordings, and numerous prestigious awards, he remains one of the most respected and widely heard classical vocalists of his generation.
