Biography

Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh (1909–1997) occupies a distinguished place in the intellectual and performance history of Hindustani classical music. Born in Kolkata into a family deeply associated with musical innovation, he was the grandson of Dwarkanath Ghosh, the inventor of the Dwarkin harmonium. His early education combined academics and wide cultural interests, including sports and painting, before an injury redirected his focus fully towards music. This broad formative background later informed his analytical and inclusive approach to musical practice.

His training reflected both depth and diversity. He studied vocal music under Girija Shankar, Mohammed Sagir Khan, and Mohammed Dabir Khan, while his tabla training began under Masit Khan of the Farukhabad gharana, where he became a senior disciple. Seeking wider rhythmic understanding, he later trained under Ustad Feroz Khan of the Punjab gharana, introducing Punjabi gharana compositions to Kolkata’s musical landscape. This dual-gurukul training shaped his distinctive rhythmic vocabulary and scholarly outlook.

As a performer and educator, Jnan Prakash Ghosh played a central role in bridging practice and theory. He founded the Sourav Academy of Music and maintained a close association with the Sangeet Research Academy, contributing to systematic music education and research. His home in Kolkata became an informal cultural hub, hosting leading musicians and memorable recitals, reflecting his role as a facilitator of artistic exchange. Alongside live performance, he composed music for Bengali cinema, gramophone recordings, and international projects, including percussion-focused works that introduced Indian rhythm to global audiences.

Equally influential was his role as a guru. His students included leading tabla players, vocalists, and instrumentalists who later became major figures in Indian classical music. Through teaching, composition, research, and performance, Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh shaped a holistic musical legacy. His recognition with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and the Padma Bhushan stands as an acknowledgment of a life devoted to deepening and disseminating the art and knowledge of Hindustani music.
