Sunder Nursery is a 90-acre heritage garden and ecological park located in the heart of New Delhi, next to the Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site. Once known as Azim Bagh in Mughal times, it was developed in the early 20th century as a plant nursery for the new capital. Today, it stands as a major urban green space that blends history, landscape design, biodiversity, and public recreation. Developed under the Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in partnership with government agencies, Sunder Nursery has been transformed into a cultural and environmental hub. It offers gardens, heritage monuments, biodiversity zones, and open public spaces, serving as a place for leisure, learning, and community interaction for people of all ages.

About Sunder Nursery

Sunder Nursery occupies a strategically important location at the southern edge of Lutyens’ Delhi, just northwest of Humayun’s Tomb and close to the dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Spread over 25.66 hectares (around 90 acres), it lies at the intersection of historic axes connecting major Mughal-era landmarks such as Purana Qila, Feroz Shah Kotla, Safdarjung’s Tomb, and the Red Fort.

The landscape master plan, approved in 2009, was designed to integrate three key elements:

  • Strengthening nursery functions for plant propagation,
  • Creating sensitive landscaped areas around 16th-century Mughal monuments, and
  • Developing biodiversity zones with native plants, bird habitats, and butterfly areas.

Today, 20 acres are dedicated to plant propagation, making it the largest nursery in Central Delhi. Beyond its ecological role, Sunder Nursery functions as a public cultural space with garden amphitheatres, nature trails, heritage walks, and outdoor learning areas. It engages schoolchildren, musicians, environmentalists, historians, horticulturists, and the wider community.

Sunder Nursery is not only a restored historic landscape but also a living urban park—improving environmental quality, supporting biodiversity, generating livelihoods, and providing Delhi with a vital green refuge for recreation, education, and cultural activity.
