The Folly

Amethyst opened its doors in the year 2000 at the century-old Sundar Mahal, located in Jeypore Colony, Gopalapuram. The idea behind this space came from Kiran Rao, who envisioned more than just a commercial address. Her intention was to bring new life to an old haveli by restoring it with care and respect for its history. The building was revived thoughtfully, allowing its original character to remain visible, while its interiors were enriched with antiques and works of art that reflected a deep connection with heritage.

Within this restored setting, Amethyst grew as both a boutique and a café. The space evolved into a place where visitors could experience the charm of an old-world home while engaging with contemporary design and culture. Every corner of Sundar Mahal began to speak of continuity between the past and the present. The aged walls, courtyards, and rooms were not altered into something new but gently adapted to serve a modern purpose.

Amethyst stands as an example of how heritage architecture can be preserved and made relevant in today’s time.
