Chowdiah Memorial Hall

Chowdiah Memorial Hall is a well-known cultural center in Bengaluru that has played a significant role in the city’s performing arts landscape for several decades. Situated in Malleswaram, the auditorium was envisioned as a memorial to Tirumakudalu Chowdiah, one of India’s most celebrated violinists. The idea for the hall was initiated by K. K. Murthy, former chairman of the Bangalore Development Authority, who proposed creating a landmark performance space dedicated to the memory of the maestro.

A low-lying area in Gayatri Park Extension was selected for the site to ensure the structure would be visible from an elevated viewpoint. The land was leased to the Academy of Music for a period of 99 years by the city corporation. Funding for the construction was mobilized through contributions from the state government, public sector banks such as Syndicate Bank, and donations from the general public. Designed by architect S. N. Murthy, the building was completed on 14 November 1980 after seven years of construction, at a cost of ₹36 lakh.

Architecturally, Chowdiah Memorial Hall is distinctive for being shaped like a giant seven-stringed violin, complete with symbolic strings, tuning keys, bridge, and bow. The interior includes a spacious marble foyer illuminated by chandeliers, lending the venue a formal yet welcoming atmosphere. The design makes it one of the rare auditoriums globally to be both architecturally symbolic and dedicated to a single musician.

The auditorium hosts a wide range of events throughout the year, including Carnatic and Hindustani classical concerts, jazz performances, ballets, traditional and contemporary dance productions, theater, jugalbandis, ghazals, and international music festivals. It is also used for graduation ceremonies, school programs, and cultural competitions. With its strong legacy, versatile programming, and iconic design, Chowdiah Memorial Hall continues to be a vital center for artistic expression in Bengaluru.
