Bharata Kalakshetra Auditorium

Bharata Kalakshetra Auditorium is a Koothambalam located within the Kalakshetra campus in Chennai. The structure was originally designed by Shri Appukuttan Nair, drawing inspiration from the traditional temple theaters of Kerala. A Koothambalam is a closed performance space traditionally used for presenting classical art forms.

The auditorium reflects elements of Kerala’s architectural heritage, with a two-level façade created using traditional design principles. Built in alignment with concepts outlined in the Natya Shastra, the space is designed to support dance and music performances while offering clear visibility and acoustics for audiences.

Over time, the theater underwent refurbishment to adapt it for present-day use. The renovation focused on improving technical facilities such as acoustics and lighting while preserving the original character of the structure. Decorative features, including carved stone motifs and traditional wooden elements, enhance the visual appeal of the auditorium and maintain its cultural identity.
