Periyar Nagar

Periyar Nagar is a residential and cultural locality in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The neighborhood developed in the late 20th century as part of Chennai’s northern expansion. It derives its name from E. V. Ramasamy Periyar, the social reformer and founder of the Dravidian movement. The area serves as a hub for Tamil cultural organizations, educational institutions, and small-scale industries.

The locality gained prominence in the 1990s due to its proximity to the Chennai Central Railway Station and the Chennai Metro’s expansion. Periyar Nagar hosts the Periyar Thidal, a memorial and public space dedicated to Periyar’s ideals. The site features a statue of Periyar and a library housing Dravidian literature. Annual events, including public lectures and rationalist gatherings, occur at the Thidal.

Culturally, Periyar Nagar supports Tamil folk arts and political theater. The Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association operates a branch in the area, organizing performances of therukoothu (street theater) and villupattu (bow-song narration). Local troupes such as Kalaignar Koothu Patai have staged adaptations of Periyar’s speeches and Dravidian literary works in the neighborhood.

In 2015, the documentary film Periyar: Vaazhga Valamudan premiered at the Periyar Thidal. Directed by K. Manikandan, the 45-minute film compiled archival footage of Periyar’s public addresses and interviews with contemporaries. The Tamil Nadu government’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations produced the documentary in digital format. Notable segments include Periyar’s 1970 speech on caste annihilation and rare recordings of his debates with religious leaders.

The locality’s infrastructure includes the Periyar Nagar Bus Depot, operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai). The depot connects northern Chennai to central business districts via routes 51C and 101. Educational institutions in the area include the Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College, established in 1978 under government sponsorship. The college offers diplomas in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering.

Commercial activity in Periyar Nagar centers on small-scale printing presses and bookstores specializing in Dravidian and rationalist literature. The Periyar Pathippagam (Periyar Publications) distributes titles by Periyar, Annadurai, and Karunanidhi from its outlet on Thanthai Periyar Street. Annual book fairs, such as the Periyar Vizha, attract publishers and readers from across Tamil Nadu.

Limited documentation exists on the locality’s early urban planning. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s 2008 master plan designated Periyar Nagar as a mixed-use zone, though specific zoning records from its founding period remain unverified in public archives.
