Karkala

Karkala is a town in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India. The region holds historical and cultural significance in the development of Yakshagana, a traditional theatre form of coastal Karnataka. Karkala served as a center for Bhuta Kola (spirit worship rituals) and Yakshagana performances, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries under the patronage of Jain and Hindu rulers. The town’s Jain basadis (temples), including the monolithic Bahubali statue at Karkala, reflect its heritage as a hub for art and religion.

The Karkala Yakshagana Mela, a prominent troupe, emerged in the early 20th century. Artists from Karkala contributed to the Thenku Thittu (southern style) of Yakshagana, characterized by its distinct costume, music, and dance. Notable performers included Karkala Gopala Bhat, a lead actor (vesha) known for his portrayals of mythological characters in the 1950s–1970s. The troupe performed in open-air venues, often during temple festivals and agricultural seasons.

Karkala’s role in recording and preserving Yakshagana expanded in the late 20th century. The 1982 audio album Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini featured recordings of live performances by Karkala-based artists. The Government of Karnataka’s Department of Culture later documented performances from the region in video formats, though specific release dates and labels for these archives remain undocumented. Tracks typically included episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, accompanied by traditional instruments like the chende (drum), maddale (hand drum), and taala (cymbals).

Contemporary Yakshagana in Karkala continues through local troupes such as the Sri Durgaparameshwari Yakshagana Mandali, which stages annual performances during the Karkala Jain Mela festival. The town’s contribution to the art form includes training centers for aspiring artists, though comprehensive records of commercial releases or formal labels associated with Karkala-specific productions are limited. The cultural practice remains tied to religious observances and community gatherings, with performances often held at the Karkala Mahalingeshwara Temple and other regional venues.
