About SwarDarbar
SwarDarbar, Inc. is an organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Indian classical vocal arts. Founded by Pandit Sandip Bhattacharjee, Susmita Chakraborty, and Marcia Miller, SwarDarbar focuses on sustaining traditional knowledge systems while creating performance and learning opportunities for the next generation.
A central part of its work is the SwarDarbar Academy of Indian Arts, which offers Gurukul-style training in the Guru–Shishya tradition for students of different age groups in both the United States and India. Training is lineage-based and emphasizes authenticity in pedagogy and repertoire.
The organization also facilitates performance platforms where qualified students appear alongside established masters, helping bridge learning and professional practice. In addition, SwarDarbar positions itself as an educational resource for Indian classical vocal music and supports talented artists, including those who may lack visibility due to economic circumstances.
Cultural exchange between India and the U.S. forms another key component of its activities, encouraging immersion in the social and cultural contexts that sustain classical arts.
History
SwarDarbar, Inc. was founded by Pandit Sandip Bhattacharjee, Susmita Chakraborty, and Marcia Miller to preserve and nurture Indian classical vocal traditions. The founders identified the need for structured support systems that combine traditional pedagogy, artist mentoring, and cultural exchange.
From its inception, SwarDarbar has emphasized the Guru–Shishya parampara as a foundational model for the transmission of knowledge. Its academy programs were developed to provide systematic, lineage-based training while also offering students opportunities to share the stage with senior musicians.
Alongside training, SwarDarbar has worked to create visibility for skilled vocalists, including artists who may remain under-recognized due to limited resources. Over time, its initiatives have expanded to include advisory and cultural roles supported by a team comprising educators, administrators, and advisors.
Through these efforts, SwarDarbar contributes to the continuity and wider awareness of Indian classical vocal music across borders.
