Biography

Sandip Bhattacharjee is a well-known Hindustani classical vocalist and a major figure in the Kirana Gharana. He was born in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, and began learning music from his mother, Smt. Krishna Bhattacharjee, at the age of four. Later, he trained with Smt. Amita Dasgupta. At sixteen, he joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (ITC-SRA) as a residential scholar. There, he spent ten years learning through the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara with Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, who are sons of Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan. Although Sandip does not come from a musical family, his dedicated training and skill in the Kirana style, known for its expressive alaaps and technical exactness, have brought him international recognition.

An "A" Grade Artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Sandip holds a First Class First degree in Classical Music from Rabindra Bharati University. His versatility reaches beyond Khayal to include semi-classical genres such as Bhajans, Ghazals, and Nazrulgeeti. He has graced prestigious stages, including the 67th Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (2019), and has shared the stage with maestros such as Ustad Rashid Khan, Vidushi Girija Devi, and Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty. Internationally, he has performed at iconic venues such as the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., alongside Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj.

Sandip is also an educator, working as a Course Director at T-Series StageWorks and founding SwarDarbar in New York. His albums include Renditions (Sonic Octaves) and Mone Pore Aaj (Angel Digital). He has received awards such as the "Sur Mani" title and the Bharat Dignity Award in 2022 for his work in Indian classical music. Today, Sandip teaches on national reality shows and works to keep the spiritual essence of Indian Raga alive while adopting new ideas.
