About Ragamala

Founded in 1981, Ragamala is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation committed to advancing the traditional performing arts of South Asia in the Pacific Northwest. Based in the Seattle region, it presents concerts featuring leading Hindustani and Carnatic musicians while also organising workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and community engagement programs. Revived in 2019 under renewed leadership, Ragamala continues its mission to connect communities through classical music. Operated entirely by volunteers, the organisation collaborates with artists, educators, and cultural institutions to create meaningful experiences for audiences while supporting the preservation and appreciation of South Asian musical traditions.

History

Ragamala was established in 1981 to promote South Asian classical performing arts through high-quality cultural programming in the Seattle area. Over the decades, it presented numerous concerts by distinguished musicians and expanded its activities to include educational outreach and community events. Following a brief hiatus, the organisation was revitalised in 2019 with a new leadership team and a renewed focus on community building through classical music. Since its revival, Ragamala has expanded its reach through both in-person and online programming, strengthening its role as a cultural platform for artists, students, and audiences interested in the musical traditions of the Indian subcontinent.
