History

Raag-Mala Toronto was founded in 1981 during a period of growing South Asian cultural presence in Canada. Its founders envisioned a structured platform that would regularly present Indian classical music at a professional standard while also fostering deeper public understanding of the art form.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the organization established a consistent concert calendar, hosting eminent visiting artists alongside Canada-based musicians. Educational components, including lecture-demonstrations and artist interactions, became a parallel focus, reinforcing its dual commitment to performance and pedagogy.

By 2022, Raag-Mala Toronto marked 42 years of uninterrupted programming. Its sustained activity over four decades positions it among the most enduring North American institutions dedicated exclusively to Indian classical music.
