Somashekar and Sowmya Somashekar are Indian classical dance practitioners based in Bengaluru, specializing in Bharatanatyam and Kathak. Trained under Guru Dr. Suparna Venkatesh at Sai Arts International, their work reflects a strong foundation in traditional techniques combined with academic training from institutions such as the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography and Bengaluru University. Both artists are also graded performers with Doordarshan, Bengaluru.
As performers, they have represented Indian classical dance at several international festivals, including events in the UK, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, and Russia. Their repertoire spans solo and collaborative presentations, incorporating elements from the Natyashastra, such as charis and karanas, while maintaining the structural integrity of classical forms. Their performances are rooted in tradition while engaging with diverse global audiences.
In addition to performance, they are actively involved in choreography and cultural programming, contributing to productions for major events and institutions such as Mysore Dasara and educational organizations. Their work extends to teaching and mentoring, supporting the next generation of dancers while continuing to engage with India’s classical arts ecosystem through performances, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.
