Sea of Vapours

Sea of Vapours is the sixth track from the 1990 studio album Mustt Mustt by Pakistani Qawwali vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Canadian guitarist and producer Michael Brook. The album marked a collaboration between traditional Sufi devotional music and contemporary ambient and electronic production techniques. Real World Records released the album on CD under the label’s world music imprint.

The track runs for three minutes and fifty-eight seconds. Brook employed digital delay and looped guitar textures to complement Khan’s improvised vocal phrasing, which retains the microtonal inflections characteristic of Qawwali. The composition blends the rhythmic and melodic structures of the qaul form with layered electronic soundscapes. Lyrics draw from Persian and Punjabi poetic traditions, though specific textual sources remain undocumented in the album’s liner notes.

Mustt Mustt emerged from sessions recorded in Pakistan and mixed in Bath, England. Brook produced the album and contributed guitar, synth, and programming, while Khan led vocal performances with his ensemble of harmonium, tabla, and backing vocalists. The tracklist includes nine compositions, with Sea of Vapours positioned as the sixth entry. The album received international distribution and later appeared in remastered editions, though the original 1990 CD release remains the primary format for this recording.

Critics and listeners often highlight the track for its fusion of sacred and experimental elements. The collaboration introduced Khan’s music to Western audiences while preserving the spiritual intensity of his Qawwali roots. No official music video or alternate versions of Sea of Vapours exist in public records. The album’s liner notes credit Khan as the primary composer, with Brook’s arrangements adapted in partnership.
