Mustt Mustt

Mustt Mustt is a studio album by Pakistani Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Real World Records released the album on CD in 1990. The project marked Khan’s first major collaboration with Western producers and musicians, blending traditional Qawwali with electronic and ambient elements. The label did not disclose the exact release date beyond the year 1990.

The album contains 11 tracks. Khan performed lead vocals on all compositions, accompanied by his ensemble of harmonium, tabla, and backing vocalists. Notable tracks include Mustt Mustt (Lost in His Work), a reworked Qawwali piece with synthesized textures, and Nothing Without You (Tery Bina), a devotional song adapted for the album’s fusion style. The closing track features a remix of Mustt Mustt by the British trip-hop group Massive Attack, introducing Khan’s music to a broader international audience.

Other tracks on the album are Tracery, The Game, Taa Deem, Sea of Vapours, Fault Lines, Tana Dery Na, Shadow, and Avenue. The production incorporated field recordings, digital effects, and live instrumentation, though specific session details remain partially undocumented. Real World Records founder Peter Gabriel contributed to the album’s conceptual direction, though Khan retained primary artistic control over the vocal performances.

Mustt Mustt received attention for its cross-cultural approach, though the album’s commercial performance figures were not publicly released. The Massive Attack remix later appeared on compilations and introduced Khan’s work to electronic music audiences. The original CD release included liner notes with translations of selected lyrics, emphasizing the Sufi poetic themes central to Khan’s repertoire.
