Rag Pilu, Alap and Rag Kirwani

Sarod is a collaborative studio album by Indian classical musicians Amjad Ali Khan and Zakir Hussain. The composition begins with an alaap in Rag Pilu, gradually transitioning into the faster jat-tala sections of Rag Kirwani. Hussain’s tabla accompaniment incorporates complex rhythmic cycles, including teentaal and variations of ektaal, while Khan’s sarod phrasing explores the melodic contours of both rags.

The album’s production credits remain partially undocumented, but the recording took place in a studio setting with minimal post-production intervention. The liner notes include brief commentary on the rags’ structural elements, though no detailed session documentation survives. Amjad Ali Khan and Zakir Hussain had previously collaborated on stage and in recordings, but Sarod marked one of their few full-length studio albums as a duo.
