Lake Disappointment

Lake Disappointment is the sixth track on the 2001 studio album Neandertal Grooves by the Espoo Big Band in collaboration with percussionist and composer Trilok Gurtu. The album was released on October 1, 2001 under the independent Finnish label EBB in CD format. The composition reflects a fusion of jazz orchestration with world music elements, a hallmark of Gurtu’s cross-genre approach.

The Espoo Big Band, a Finland-based jazz ensemble, served as the primary performing unit for the album. Gurtu contributed as a featured artist, providing percussion, drum programming, and compositional input. The tracklist of Neandertal Grooves includes nine original works, with Lake Disappointment positioned as Track VI. The album’s production integrated electronic textures alongside acoustic instrumentation, a characteristic of Gurtu’s late-1990s and early-2000s output.

The title Lake Disappointment references a salt lake in Western Australia, though the album’s liner notes do not specify a direct conceptual link between the track and its namesake. The composition’s duration spans approximately seven minutes, featuring layered rhythms and improvisational sections typical of Gurtu’s collaborative projects.
