Dawn - Rāg Kirwānī / Maqām Nahawand
About Dawn - Rāg Kirwānī / Maqām Nahawand
Saltanah is a collaborative studio album by Indian slide guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Palestinian-American violinist and oud player Simon Shaheen. The album released on December 7, 2006, under the label Water Lily Acoustics in CD format. The recording explores intersections between Hindustani classical music and Arabic maqamat, blending the mohan veena with violin and oud.
The opening track Dawn – Rāg Kirwānī / Maqām Nahawand spans 15 minutes and 25 seconds. Bhatt performs on the mohan veena, a modified Hawaiian guitar adapted for Indian classical music, while Shaheen contributes violin and oud. The composition merges Rāg Kirwānī, a morning rāga in the Hindustani tradition, with Maqām Nahawand, a foundational mode in Arabic classical music. The track exemplifies the album’s cross-cultural improvisational approach, with extended alap-style development followed by rhythmic interplay.
The album title Saltanah derives from an Arabic term meaning ‘sultanate’ or ‘dominion,’ reflecting the artists’ intent to bridge musical traditions. Water Lily Acoustics, known for high-fidelity recordings of world and classical music, produced the album with minimal post-production to preserve acoustic fidelity. No additional session musicians or vocalists appear on the release. The liner notes include brief commentary by Bhatt and Shaheen on their collaborative process, though detailed recording locations remain undocumented in public sources.
Beyond Dawn, the album features five additional tracks, each pairing a Hindustani rāga with a corresponding maqām. The total runtime exceeds 70 minutes. Critical reception at the time highlighted the technical precision of both artists and the rarity of such direct collaborations between Indian and Arabic classical musicians. The release followed Bhatt’s prior work in fusion projects, including his Grammy-winning album A Meeting by the River (1994) with Ry Cooder, and Shaheen’s established career in Arabic and Western classical crossover performances.
