About Saltanah
Saltanah is a collaborative studio album by Palestinian-American oud and violin virtuoso Simon Shaheen and Indian mohan veena maestro Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The artists released the album on December 7, 2006, under the Water Lily Acoustics label in CD format. The recording represents a fusion of Hindustani classical music and Arabic maqamat, blending improvisational traditions from both cultures.
Shaheen and Bhatt composed the album as a series of five extended raga-maqam intersections, each track exploring shared melodic and rhythmic frameworks. The opening piece Dawn merges Rāg Kirwānī with Maqām Nahawand, establishing the album’s cross-cultural dialogue. Ghazāl follows with a synthesis of Rāg Vasant Mukhārī and Maqām Ḥijāz, emphasizing lyrical phrasing and microtonal inflections. The title track Salṭanah combines Rāg Bagashrī with Maqām ʻAjam Muʼaddal, showcasing intricate taan and taqsim exchanges between the artists. Mists pairs Rāg Pahāṛi with Maqām ʻAjam, while the closing track Dusk integrates Rāg Bhairavī with Maqām Kurd, concluding the album with a meditative alap-jor-jhala structure.
The production retains an acoustic focus, capturing the natural resonance of Shaheen’s oud and violin alongside Bhatt’s modified slide guitar (mohan veena). Water Lily Acoustics, known for its audiophile recordings of world music, engineered the sessions to preserve dynamic range and instrumental timbre. The album’s liner notes include technical annotations on the raga-maqam correlations but omit detailed recording locations or session personnel.
Critical reception at the time highlighted the album’s role in documenting cross-cultural improvisation, though specific sales figures or chart performances remain undocumented. Live performances of the material occurred sporadically in 2007, primarily at international world music festivals. No reissues or expanded editions have been confirmed as of the latest available records.
