About Shehnai Samrat
Shehnai Samrat is a studio album by Indian classical shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan. The label T-Series released the album in 1991 on CD format. The recording captures Khan’s interpretations of traditional North Indian classical ragas and folk-inspired compositions, showcasing his mastery of the shehnai.
The album contains seven tracks. Khan performs Raag Todi, a morning raga known for its introspective and emotive phrasing. He follows with Raag Bhimpalasi, an afternoon raga characterized by its fluid, oscillating notes. The track Rachna Purab Ang reflects the Purab Ang style of the Benaras gharana, emphasizing intricate taans and gamaks. Raag Brindabani Sarang appears as a mid-tempo composition with a lyrical quality, while Raag Shyam Kalyan presents a late-evening raga with a devotional undertone.
Khan includes two folk-inspired pieces: Kajri Dadra and Kajri (Old Style). Both tracks draw from the Kajri tradition of eastern Uttar Pradesh, blending rustic melodies with classical embellishments.
