Biography
Ustad Bismillah Khan holds a singular place in the history of Indian classical music for elevating the shehnai to global recognition as a concert instrument. Born on 21 March 1916 in Dumraon, Bihar, into a family of court musicians, he was immersed in music from an early age. His initial training began after moving to Varanasi, where he studied under his maternal uncle, Ali Bux ‘Vilayatu’ Khan, a shehnai player associated with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. His daily practice along the banks of the river Ganga became an integral part of his musical discipline.
His career gained national attention in 1937 following his performance at the All India Music Conference in Kolkata, which brought the shehnai into the spotlight as a classical concert instrument. Over the years, he represented Indian classical music at prestigious international platforms across Europe, North America, West Asia, and Asia, including the World Exposition in Montreal and the Cannes Art Festival.
Deeply rooted in Indian cultural traditions, Ustad Bismillah Khan performed at both Hindu and Muslim ceremonies and was widely regarded as a symbol of communal harmony. His performance at the Red Fort during India’s Independence Day celebrations in 1947 remains one of the most historic moments in Indian music history.
In recognition of his lifelong contribution, he received numerous national and international honors, including the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. His legacy continues through recordings, institutions, and awards established in his name, securing his position as the most iconic shehnai maestro in Indian classical music.
