About Shakti
Shakti is a studio album by Carnatic vocalist Sudha Ragunathan, released in 2005 under the French label Accords Croisés. The album adopts a CD format and features nine tracks that blend traditional Carnatic compositions with thematic cohesion centered on divine feminine energy and devotional expressions.
Sudha Ragunathan curated the tracklist to highlight compositions in praise of Hindu deities, with a predominant focus on goddess-oriented kritis and devotional songs. The album opens with Valli kanavan, a composition in ragam Shanmukhapriya dedicated to Lord Murugan, followed by Brahman okate in Bowli, a philosophical piece by Saint Tyagaraja. Neerdha sama neela krishna in Khambodi pays homage to Lord Krishna, while Gandhamu puyyaruga in Saranga invokes divine fragrance as a metaphor for spiritual devotion.
The album includes two interpretations of Visalakshim vishveshim (Parts I and II), both set in Dwijavanti and centered on Goddess Lakshmi, showcasing Ragunathan’s improvisational prowess in neraval and swaram.
