About Carnatic Vocal
Inthamodi is a Carnatic vocal music album by Indian classical vocalist Sudha Ragunathan. The label INRECO released the album in 1994 on compact disc as an official commercial production. The recording features eight tracks that showcase Ragunathan’s interpretations of traditional compositions and lighter devotional pieces.
The album opens with the track Inthamodi, a kriti in raga Khamas set to Adi tala. The composition Raagasudharasa follows in raga Andolika, a piece attributed to composer Syama Sastri. Neepaadamegathi appears as a kriti in raga Kalyani, while Maathangisri presents a devotional song in the raga of the same name. The track Etiyochanalu is a kriti in raga Varali, and Maalai Varum Velai offers a lighter composition in raga Madhyamavati.
The album also includes Pazhani, a devotional song dedicated to Lord Murugan, and concludes with Thillana, a rhythmic piece in raga Shanmukhapriya. The selection balances classical kritis with semi-classical and devotional works, reflecting Ragunathan’s versatility in the Carnatic tradition. The release date of the album aligns with its production year, though specific event details for its launch remain undocumented.
Sudha Ragunathan’s renditions in Inthamodi emphasize melodic phrasing and lyrical clarity, consistent with her performance style during the 1990s. The album serves as an example of her early commercial recordings under the INRECO label, contributing to her reputation as a leading Carnatic vocalist of her generation.
