About Rang
Rang is a collaborative studio album by Indian classical musicians Bickram Ghosh and Kala Ramnath. The album combines elements of Hindustani classical music with contemporary fusion, featuring Ghosh on percussion and Ramnath on violin. True Music released the project in digital format on August 2, 2020.
The album contains seven tracks. Bickram Ghosh composed and arranged the percussion frameworks, while Kala Ramnath contributed violin melodies rooted in the Mewati gharana tradition. The title track Rang opens the album with an improvisational dialogue between tabla and violin. Paal follows with a slower, meditative structure, emphasizing Ramnath’s use of meend (glissando) techniques. Leela introduces rhythmic complexity through Ghosh’s layered percussion patterns, including variations on the teentaal cycle.
Subsequent tracks explore diverse moods and tempos. Rasiya adopts a semi-classical approach with folk-inflected phrasing, while Bhavaani centers on a devotional theme, incorporating chants and dynamic rhythmic shifts. Yatra and Nau conclude the album with progressive compositions, the former blending Carnatic-inspired violin runs with Ghosh’s experimental percussion textures and the latter serving as a climactic fusion piece.
The production retains an acoustic core but incorporates subtle electronic enhancements in post-processing. True Music promoted the release as part of its series on contemporary classical adaptations. No physical media accompanied the digital launch, and the label did not disclose commercial performance metrics. Additional details about recording locations, session musicians, or live performances remain undocumented in available sources.
