About Raga Bageshri / Desh
Raga Bageshri / Desh is a studio album of North Indian classical music released in 1998. Vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan performed the khayal and tarana compositions, accompanied by Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay on tabla and Jyoti Goho on tanpura. The album appeared under the India Archive Music label in CD format.
The recording features two ragas: Bageshri and Desh. The Bageshri segment opens with a vilambit bandish in Ektal, followed by two drut bandishes—one in Tintal and another in Ektal. The Desh segment includes a bandish in Tintal and concludes with a tarana in the same tal. The album comprises five tracks in total.
The performance captures Khan’s rendition of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana style, characterized by intricate taan patterns and emotive phrasing. Bandopadhyay’s tabla accompaniment adheres to the traditional Benares gharana approach, while Goho’s tanpura provides a continuous resonant drone.
